The Olympics are not just a sporting event

To the editor,

Several people believe that money that went towards the Olympics of Vancouver 2010 could have been better spend elsewhere - for the devastating tragedy in Haiti for example. But there is no denying that the games didn’t bring thousands of people and communities together. For example, the Olympic Torch Relay brought tons of people together to celebrate the Olympic games in Canada. It’s not only a sporting event, but it helps shatter stereotypes and it also reunites the whole world.

The Olympics gives people a sense of other cultures in the world. Each nation gets to wave their countries flag in pride during the opening ceremonies and observe as athletes from other countries do the same thing. People are forced to interact with each other by competing, showing a sense of sportsmanship and cheering for those inspirational moments. Competitors are forced to put their differences aside and compete against each other. It’s almost impossible to recall any other recent event that brings this many people together all at once. It allows all the countries to come together in peace and celebrate the accomplishments of the worlds top athletes.

To prove all this, 21-year-old Nodar Kumaritashvili, a luger from the former Soviet republic of Georgia was killed while practicing for the 2010 Vancouver Olympic games. He and his luge lost control and went over the side of the track hitting a nearby pole. Everyone from all over the world were extremely supportive, it didn’t matter what country he came from or what differences he had. Everyone prayed for him to survive, but five hours later he had passed away.

Several protesters say that the winter games are a waste of money without realizing the good it brings. It’s not often that all the countries and showcased athletes are brought together in one stadium. It’s almost a miracle. It not only allows people to have pride in their country, but it also allows them to celebrate accomplishments of the top athletes around the world together.
